IFA.com – http – The random walk of stock market prices and the efficient market hypothesis is simulated by physical action of beads hitting a pattern of pins. The Efficient Market Hypothesis says prices are fair. If the expected return of an investment is 1% per month, about half the monthly returns will below and above that average return. So the fair price set at the beginning of each month sets the chance that future returns will be 50% higher and 50% lower than the expected return. The further the returns deviate from the average, the less likely they are to occur. The red bar overlay represents 600 simulated monthly returns of ifa’s Index Portfolio 100. As you can see the distribution of the beads is similar to the index portfolio.

by Eleanor Flannel-Feet

Everyone that hasn’t been living under a rock for the last year and a half will be well aware that this recession could possibly be the worst one that the world has ever seen. In fact, the last time the economy was in this sort of state it was world war two that got it all back on track, and I’m guessing nobody wants a world war three so we are going to have to look for different solutions.

It is believed that there are three main causes for the economic slump, and one solution, this theory has been called the four Ms.

I believe that the first factor that helped cause this recession is Mr. Mervyn King. He clearly doesn’t even realise how much of an impact his statements have or the mayhem and panic that they have caused. The second “M” to blame, perhaps more so than the others, is the media.

I believe that both of these factors should be willing to take most of the blame for the situation we all find ourselves in. The media are simply exacerbating matters with their constant negativity and messages of doom. It is enough to make the best of businessmen panic.

The third issue to blame for the slump is the lack of money from the banks. During the economy boom, banks got lazy and now seem to have alienated themselves from customers. The Government did offer to support the banks hoping that it would have a positive effect on small businesses, but like any other business, the banks want to look after themselves and avoid risks. If the government wants to help the smaller businesses then they should forget about helping the banks.

Although the government’s new plan to pay invoices in 20 days is applaudable, they seem to have forgotten that pretty much all contracts will be with big contractors and small businesses are subcontractors. The better pay terms received by these larger contractors has not been passed down to the small businesses.

So now we’ve covered who or what is to blame, what do we do now we are here? Well, I do not think that recession is entirely negative, there are opportunities to be had. The way to seize these opportunities is to keep carrying out the fourth “M”. Marketing.

When the economy is booming, we all become like the banks, lazy. This is because in comparison to times like these, customers are simply falling through your door, but now we have to work a lot harder. Companies absolutely MUST keep on marketing themselves throughout these harder times and judging by the last economic downturn of the early 90’s, the ones that do will be sitting right at the top of the pile come the day the economy starts growing again.

Sponsored Enterprises is holding a hearing to assess the alleged billion investment fraud engineered by Mr. Bernard L. Madoff. This is the second in a series of hearings that will help to guide the work of the Financial Services Committee and the Capital Markets Subcommittee in the 111th Congress in undertaking the most substantial rewrite of the laws governing the US financial markets since the Great Depression. Rep. Gary Ackerman questioned witnesses from the Securities and Exchange.

Rep. Ron Paul has always expressed his opinions passionately about the state of the economy. In this video, he outlines what the US is doing wrong. He said ~ We spent too much, we borrowed too much, we printed too much money, we over-regulated, etc.

We are apparently looking at the collapse of the market that is not sustainable. The Federal Reserve Systerm created too much credit. Long term this is a disaster. We pumped in too much money. It is going to destroy the dollar. Then you are going to destroy worldwide economy. We need oversight of a lot of things.

Today we are going to share a story of a lady whom wrote in about her situation regarding the economy. We generally do not do this but this lady is very depressed and asked that we share her story. The story is below:

“For the first time in my life, I have been left totally alone.

My son grew up this year and spent his summer abroad, so the house consists of me and the old man.

The economy has affected us as he is a pipe fitter, and there is no work at all here at home. He’s working, 1200 miles away.

Our rent is paid in both places, but all the lonely is killing me, and depression has consumed my soul.”

The slow economy has undoubtedly affected retail sales. People have less disposable income so they are spending less and saving more money. With the drop in retail sales, stores cannot afford to hire many employees. Existing employees see their hours cut back or get laid off. Fear of job loss is common among retail sales associates.

We have asked a few people in retail sales of their experience during this economy. Read below what one of them say:

“My sister-in-law is in retail sales. She has seen her sales per hour on the floor drop dramatically. She has also had her hours cut back as her store has cut staffing due to lower levels of foot traffic. Her mass-market high-end women’s clothing boutique has also lost several employees due to attrition because they were not getting the hours they needed.”

If your products are not absolutely necessary, then you are more likely to see a drop in sales because people cannot afford expensive items nowadays and saving money is more important right now.

Do you have a story to share about retail sales and the economy?

Gas seems to be staying expensive. Now, driving is a concern. Right now, gas and many other products are expensive and possibly could get even more expensive. The slow economy has driven prices up exponentially for both gas and other products. As a result, people have to change their lifestyles and think twice about how, when, and where to spend their money.

Gas is the worst of all

This is especially true with regard to gas, which people used to purchase without thinking too much about it. Now people have to consider how much driving they truly need to do to accomplish everyday tasks and try to economize their driving trips wherever possible.

If you watch the news or read it online, you will hear of many stories about how the high gas price is affecting people on a world wide scale. Not only in the US, but in most places in the world. On http://www.usatoday.com there was an interesting story about how the high gas price is affecting a community, hitting rural Americans particularly hard. The article is called “High gas prices threaten to shut down rural towns”.

Please leave comments if you have something to share about high gas price.

When you are investing, it is important to keep up with the news about the economy and news in the financial industry in general. After all, everything is related in finance. One major economic factor could mean you cannot invest in whatever you wanted to invest in. Banks in trouble, companies missing earning estimates by analysts, the Fed has to chip in, durable goods, job data, real estate and housing statistics, etc… all of these factors add up and really influence the economy and the way you should save money and invest.

Is it ok if I invest now?

Don’t invest unless you know the market, the industry, profit drivers, value drivers, and financial projections. Do I make investing look like it is difficult? It is especially if you are new at investing. When you have been investing for years and years, you will develop the ’spider sense’ for investing and then everything will be easier for you. But, until then, let’s be very careful when considering any kind of investment.

If you are starting to think about investing, read a few financial sites to gauge the trend of the economy and the financial industry. Whatever you are interested in investing, watch its trend for a while before you actually put you money in it. Start with http://finance.yahoo.com or http://money.cnn.com – they usually have great news and many articles you can learn about the economy and the financial industry on a world wide basis.
